Dancing with Shamans – A Journey into the Heart of Ancient Ritual

Earlier this year, we shared the powerful story of a Tamang shaman on the socialtours.com blog — a glimpse into a world few get to see. He spoke of spirits, ancestral guidance, and the long road to becoming a full-fledged dhami or jhankri. One of the most significant milestones in that journey is the Dancing with Shamans ritual — held during the August Full Moon in Temal, Kavre.
For generations, this sacred night has marked a rite of passage. In a forest clearing under the full moon, apprentice shamans gather to dance, chant, and connect with the spirits through ancient rhythms — gaining the energy and recognition to become fully empowered. It is raw, unfiltered, and deeply spiritual.
At Socialtours, we’ve been doing our part to keep this tradition alive by offering respectful access to this ceremony in two locations — the remote and dramatic Gosainkunda Lakes in Langtang, and in Temal, a more accessible destination for an unforgettable overnight journey.

DRIVE DAY
0800 hrs: Drive from Kathmandu to Temal, a scenic hill area with great views and peaceful surroundings. The drive takes about 4 to 5 hours. After reaching, we check in at Hotel Shangri-La, a local hotel. Stop along the way for Lunch. In the evening, we join the special Full Moon ceremony, where shamans gather to sing, drum, and perform traditional rituals. You can watch, take photos, or simply enjoy the powerful energy of the night.

IMMERSION & RETURN
After breakfast, we wander back into the forests, where hundreds of shamans are gathering from near and far. If time allows, we may visit a nearby monastery or speak with a local shaman. Around mid-morning, we begin our drive back to Kathmandu, arriving by the afternoon.
