Little known but highly acclaimed, Nepal produces very good quality high altitude coffee. Join this trip to discover the processes of organic coffee, from crop all the way to the cup - and beyond through upcycling and recycling
The Story
Coffee came into Nepal several years ago when a returning traveller brought some plants from abroad to remote Argakhanchi district in Mid Western Nepal, and planted some in his garden. The plants did well and the neighbours also planted a few, but did not really know what to do with the beans when they started being ready for harvest. Its only in the last 15 - 20 years that coffee has become the crazy in the mid-hills, between 900m upto about 1800m altitude, as a cash crop, intercropped with cardamom, fruit trees etc.
Coffee estates are few to come by in Nepal, though its slowly starting. Individual farmers with small land holdings plant a few seedlings and bring in the produce in small quantities to local collectors who also double up as processors, who will use the wet method to produce the parchment or green beans.
Wholesalers then will pick this up, either directly or from the cooperatives, sort them and bag them and send them either for export, or to the retail industry, or to the coffee shops that keep popping up. Today coffee is a new found crazy, and coffee shops abound in Kathmandu, Pokhara and even in little towns.
This trip is a wonderful way to discover local life in villages, see how the agricultural mechanism functions, participate in harvesting and processing (in the right time of year) and also understand how the export and retail industries function. Your appreciation of speciality coffee increases quite a bit after this trip.
The trip is flexible, and one can choose between going to easy access locations like Begnas near Pokhara for the farm component, or to remote locations in Gorkha or Ilam, and stay options can be adjusted between farm stays or hotel stays - totally customisable.

We meet at the famous Himlayan Java coffee house in Thamel for a trip briefing and setting the tone for the trip. Himalayan Java is the most prolific of coffee shops which has several shops in Nepal and even abroad. Later we go for a welcome dinner at a traditional restaurant
Today we travel, according to the customised itinerary, to either Begnas, Ilam, Gorkha, or a location that has been decided. The travel could be by air and car, or by car/jeep to the farm. Once at the farm of choice, we shall be greeted by the farmer, and we shall start the introduction into coffee farming in the area. In this suggestive itinerary, we are recommending travel to Pokhara and the coffee farm in Begnas and a homestay
Today is our hand-on experience day in the farm, picking cherries or processing or sorting as we understand the process in depth.
Today we move to a location to rest and reward ourselves. This could be in Pokhara or Dharan or at a resort, depending on how the custom itinerary is built for each trip.
Today we travel back to Kathmandu and visit the wholesale centers where the sorting, quality control and bagging is done, to see the finished processes a bit deeper.
Today is the last day of the trip, where we learn the final stages of the process. Export is one channel where the coffee goes and the other is to the coffee shops. We visit the highly rated Karma Coffee which is a coffee boutique for this, and understand what all can be done with the finished product. At Karma, the coffee is made into cups of course, but also recycled into massage oils, facial scrubs, paper etc. We end the day with a debriefing dinner at a Bhutanese Restaurant, and probably some of our subject matter specialists might be invited, if they are available.
