Looking for a good challenge in the Everest Region thats not only walking the main trekking highway? The 5 x 5000 m takes you to five highlights in the Everest Region
Renjo La, 5390m
The first 5000m+ that you reach is on the fifth day on the trek. The Renjo La is a small pass that not too many trekkers go, that leads into the Gokyo Valley. Its probably one of the best spots to view the Everest Range, and one of the few spots in the Everest Region where the mountain actually looks taller than the other giants.
Gokyo Ri, 5400m
A day later, after a night at Gokyo Village, you have the opportunity to do a day hike up Gokyo Ri, the second highlight on this trek. Standing atop the Peak, you will be able to see the beautiful valley with its glacial lakes, the amazing huge glacier, and the Everest Range beyond, a memory that will stay with you.
Cho-La, 5425m
Two days after this, you will be doing the next highlight of the trek, as you cross over into the valley that leads to the Everest Base Camp and you finally get back on the main trekking trail. Cho-La is a bit taxing, but the rewards from the top are worth it.
Kalapatthar, 5565m
The highest point on your trek is Kalapatthar, that you will reach three day after you do the Cho-La, after nights at Dzongla, Loubouche and Gorakshep. This is one of the main highlights in the Everest Region as this is the closest view you get of Everest, and the highest you will reach.
Everest Base Camp, 5350m
The last highlight is the famous Everest Base Camp, the point where all mountaineers attempting the giant will stop and acclimatize, reassess, train, prepare, and come back to glory.
These of course are not the only highlights of this trek, but the main ones to mention. The villages you stay, the culture you experience and the amazing mountain scenery makes this trek one of the best ways to view this region.
Highlights
Early in the morning, we shall transfer to the domestic airport for the 35 minutes flight to Lukla. Upon arrival, our team will prepare for the trek and then start off on a four hours hike to our lodge in Monjo.
Post breakfast, we head off on our uphill, cross a very long suspension bridge and then make our trudge before lunch to Namche Bazaar. Traditionally, treks stop in Namche Bazaar for the night, but we shall move to a small village of Thamo, about two hours away, which is at a similar altitude as Namche.
Today post breakfast, we shall trek a very short distance as an acclimatisation day. We reach really early at Thame, the birthplace of Appu Sherpa, who has climbed Everest 21 times, a world record. In the afternoon, one has the option to hike to the monastery above Thame, for a little adjustment to the altitude
After the acclimatization that we have, we should be ready today to make the trudge to the base camp for climbing Renjo La. Lungden is a small purpose built lodging area which has a few lodges. We shall reach here in about five hours and rest up, keeping in mind the fact that we are above 4000m
Renjo La is our first highlight on the trek. The small 4390m pass is accessible with a four to five hours uphill trek from Lungden. Upon arrival up here, we shall have great views of the Everest Range, weather permitting, of course. After resting up here, we shall walk about three hours down to the settlement of Gokyo besides the Dudhkunda lake.
Its time to rest a bit, and if you want to brave it a bit, take on the second highlight, one of the most popular viewpoints for Everest, Gokyo-Ri @ 5450m. This will take about five to six hours in total. An alternative is to go to the fifth lake on a day trip to view Everest with no interruptions in between.
Another amazing day for experiences will be the walk through a moving glacier. The Nogzumpa glacier is one the longest glaciers in the world and passes just above Gokyo, with a very thin moraine protecting the village from the glacier. As it melts, the glacier moves, and we traverse over this to go to the village of Dragnag.
The third highlight of the trek is the over 5000m pass at ChoLa, and today we have a big day of movement where we go over the pass and onto the other side at Dzongla.
Today we come back into the main trail into Everest Base Camp, and move for about four hours to Lobouche.
After an early rise, we trek up the hill to the highest point that we will be sleeping at - Gorakshep at 5100m. If we arrive early, we could go for sunset atop Kalapatthar, which is the highest point we shall reach on this trek, at 5565m.
The Everest Base Camp is our final highlight on this trek, at 5325m. We do a day trip to go there, enjoy the fact that we have reached the point where all mountaineers go and then come back to Gorakhshep for the night
Post breakfast, we start our journey back on the main trail and come all the way back to Dingboche, one of the acclimatization stops on the way up if you go on the main trail.
The Tyangboche monastery is one of the most famous in the area, and today we trek to this monastery and stay in one of the lodges around. At three in the afternoon, we shall make our way to the monastery for the evening prayers, which is quite an experience. If you still feel like a walk, one could trek all the way up to the viewpoint above the village
Now that we are on the way back, its time to relax a bit, as we have only a few more days to go. We shall trek about five hours to Namche bazaar and hit one of the coffee shops there, or have a great drink.
Today we do not have to start early, as we only have a shorter trek today. We shall trek downhill from Namche Bazaar to Phakding.
Lukla is only three hours away, but we cannot reach there to catch a flight, so we can take our last day on the trek easy.
A short walk from our hotel will get us to the one of the most busiest airports in Nepal - Lukla. A little bit of patience might be required for waiting for the flight. The 35 minute flight will bring us down to Kathmandu, where an awaiting car will transfer us back to the hotel.
